Air quality control in operating rooms helps us to prevent infections, ensuring a safe environment for patients and medical staff. This article discusses the methods of sampling and analysis of conditioned air in operating rooms, highlighting its importance and best practices.Â
The presence of contaminants, such as particles, bacteria and viruses, can increase the risk of postoperative infections. Therefore, it is essential to implement air conditioning systems that meet quality standards and to perform periodic sampling to ensure their effectiveness.
SAMPLE COLLECTION METHODS
We use counters to measure the concentration of particles in the air. These devices can detect different sizes, providing a detailed view of air quality.Â
We use agar plates for air sampling to capture airborne microorganisms. Samples are incubated and analyzed to identify and quantify bacteria and fungi.
We use special sensors to detect contaminant gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethylene oxide (EtO). These gases can be indicative of problems in the ventilation system.
AIR ANALYSIS
The data obtained from the particle counters are analyzed to determine the concentration and distribution of particles in the air. This helps to evaluate the effectiveness of the filters and the cleanliness of the air.
Â
Microbial colonies grown on agar plates are counted and identified. This allows us to detect the presence of pathogens to assess the risk of infections.
Â
Gas levels are compared to established standards to determine if there are deviations that could affect air quality. Â
RECOMMENDATIONS
Regular maintenance of air conditioning systems, including filter cleaning and replacement, is essential.
Â
Implement continuous monitoring systems to detect any changes in air quality in real time.
Â
Ensure that personnel are trained in air quality control best practices and in the use of sampling and analytical equipment.
At INPAL we implement appropriate methods and follow best practices to significantly reduce the risk of infections and improve surgical outcomes.
