The water that comes out of an air conditioner is a result of the condensation process. Air conditioners cool air by passing it through cold coils (evaporators). As the warm, moist air passes over these coils, the moisture in the air condenses into water droplets, similar to what happens when a cold glass ‘sweats’ on a hot day.
This condensed water is usually collected in a drain pan and then expelled out of the unit through a drain pipe. However, in some cases, water accumulation may be excessive due to clogged drainage problems or lack of maintenance.
What can be done with air conditioning water:
Watering plants: Condensed water does not contain minerals or chlorine, so it is suitable for watering plants. However, it should not be used on edible plants or directly in orchards, as it may contain contaminants.
Cleaning: Can be used to clean floors, cars or other surfaces, as it is relatively pure water.
Use in humidifiers or irons: Because it contains no minerals, it is suitable for refilling humidifiers or steam irons, which reduces limescale build-up.
Evaporative cooling systems: In certain industrial or domestic systems, condensed water can be reused for evaporative cooling, reducing the demand for new water.
Recycling in grey water systems: In more advanced projects, condensed water can be stored and used in grey water recycling systems for toilets or other non-potable applications.
