La luz ultravioleta es parte del espectro electromagnético con cierta longitud de onda, la hay de varias sub-clases como la UV-A (ultravioleta tipo A) UV-B y UV-C. La clase de luz utilizada como tipo germicida es la UVC, la longitud de onda con la que trabaja la UVC se encuentra entre los 220 y los 300 nanómetros, su efectividad culminante se desempeña en los 254 nm.
