When we talk about air conditioning systems, we think of large equipment, coils, or ducts. But there is one very important element: DAMPERS, also known as AIR DAMPERS.
Although it sounds like a minor technical detail, DAMPERS are the balancing point in thermal comfort. They are the tool that regulates the air we breathe. DAMPERS are designed to regulate, redirect, or block the flow of air within a ventilation system, maintaining temperature, pressure, and air quality conditions.
This mechanism, within an air handling unit, is generally made of metal or corrosion-resistant materials and operates by means of blades or vanes that can be moved to open or close partially or completely.
Depending on their design (shape and size), some DAMPERS are operated manually, while others have electric or pneumatic actuators that allow them to be controlled automatically by building management systems (BMS).
The location of DAMPERS within an Air Handling Unit and the ventilation system. They are usually installed at the outside air inlet to regulate the mix of fresh air and recycled air, as well as in the main distribution ducts to control the flow to different areas. They are also found at air return points, where they help to balance pressures and prevent unwanted drafts. In more complex systems, dampers allow for the creation of isolated sections within the ducts, facilitating maintenance and the management of zones with different thermal needs.
The operation of a DAMPER depends not only on its mechanics, but also on its interaction with different mechanisms such as sensors and controllers. Temperature, pressure, and flow sensors allow DAMPERS to automatically adjust their position, maintaining a constant balance between efficiency, energy, and system safety. Thus, a damper can partially close to maintain the proper pressure in a duct, open to allow greater ventilation in an occupied area, or even completely isolate a sector in the event of maintenance or an emergency.
Although a damper may seem like a simple component, it not only controls airflow but also influences energy efficiency, user comfort, and equipment durability. Air handling units rely on these devices to precisely regulate each air stream passing through the ducts, ensuring that each space receives exactly what it needs.
